Beartooth Butte in distanceView of Beartooth Butte on the left in the distance as seen from a sideroad leading from FS Road 149. The site from which the photo is taken is about 1/2 mile northeast of Bird Mountain and offers splendid 360 degree views of the Beartooth Mountains.

Forest Service Road 149 takes off from US 212, The Beartooth Highway, toward the south and splinters into three or more subsidiary roads. The first 1/4 mile is suitable for passenger cars but soon becomes better suited to 4WD vehicles and ultimately only ORV’s as the roads become gnarly with numerous large rocks, deep tracks and mud holes. One should also note the signs indicating Grizzly Bears often frequent the area.

A number of hunters and hunting camps were observed in the area during this mid-September trip as Elk season was just about to open.
