Waterfront Fountain in Seattle

Waterfront Fountain in Seattle

One of the things that attracted me to the Waterfront Fountain in Seattle’s Waterfront Park were the images of individuals as seen through the falling water such as the two children at right. The fountain sculpture, which was begun by James Fitzgerald and later completed by Terry Copple in collaboration with Fitzgerald’s widow, is a cubical structure made of cast and welded bronze. The fountain as well as the park is a great place to take a stroll, have a picnic, take in the many views of Seattle and Elliot Bay or simply relax and enjoy the respite of doing nothing.

Gardner Lake and Gardner Lake Trailhead

Gardner Lake as seen from a large pullout on the south side of the Beartooth Highway, US 212, about one mile northwest of Beartooth Pass. The lake is fairly large and one is not likely to miss seeing it unless distracted by the majesty of the surrounding landscape or the desire to keep one’s eye on the highway. My GPS reported coordinates of N 44, 58.4304; W 109, 27.2793 and an elevation of 10,587 feet/3227 meters. There is a trailhead at this pullout and a trail offering a short hike to Gardner Lake at a distance of only about three fourths of a mile. But you are going to loose about 1,000 feet of elevation as you drop down to the lake. Then you will have to climb back up that 1,000 feet to return to your vehicle. This short hike also is the north entrance to a trail system […]

Lower Rock Creek Canyon

The Beartooth Highway, US 212, drops about two thousand feet from Rock Creek Vista Point, elevation 9,190 feet, to the floor of Rock Creek Canyon and continues in a northwest direction to the town of Red Lodge. One can see at the center of the photo the junction of USFS road #2421 which runs southwest and up the canyon for several miles, curving briefly into Wyoming and then turns northwest back toward the Montana border where it terminates at Glacier Lake. Motorized vehicles, however, must stop at a trail head two miles short of the lake. Several campgrounds dot the shore of Rock Creek, which is popular with fly fishermen. 800 feet to the point

Beartooth Loop National Recreation Trail

Looking south toward Losekamp Lake and Stockade Lake from a pullout and trailhead overlooking Gardiner Lake. The trail, Number 613.1B, leads due south from this point, skirts the very southern tip of Gardiner Lake and at 1.5 miles intersects with trail #629. At this intersection, one can either continue south on #613.1B another 2.4 miles to the junction of trails #613.1 and #613, or, turn right at the fork with #629 and follow #629 west 1.8 miles to the junction with trails #629 and #613.1A. Detailed information about these and other trails will be found in Hiking the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, 2nd (Regional Hiking Series) by Bill Schneider. Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake, snuggled down in a basin, elevation about 8,960 feet, and surrounded by timber appears as an oasis protected from the elements by barren slopes, steep cliffs, rocky crags, high ridges and windswept plateaus. A portion of Hellroaring Plateau can be seen well above the lake and just below the horizon. Beartooth Spire, “The Bear’s Tooth”, can be seen on the horizon directly above Mirror Lake and slightly left of center. Photo was taken early in October from a switchback on the Beartooth National Scenic Byway, US 212, about 1/2 mile northeast of Beartooth Pass. GPS: N 44,58.5235; W 109,27.6621; Elevation: 10,652 f/ 3247 m.

Beartooth Butte 2011

Beartooth Butte 2011

Beartooth Butte on a brilliant September afternoon as seen from US 212, the Beartooth Highway, with the southwest tip of Beartooth Lake in the foreground. The highway parallels the southeast shore of Beartooth Lake for a few hundred yards to a turnoff where one can take a paved road to the Beartooth Lake Campground, picnic area, boat launch and a trail head for exploring on foot. The campground offers 21 campsites and the picnic area has five picnic tables. From the trail head one made a loop hike of about 8 miles using trails numbered 619, 620 and 621. Going clockwise, the west leg of the loop trends northwest of Beartooth Lake following Beartooth Creek. At 2.8 miles, the trail forks with the right fork being trail 620, the second leg of the loop, which trends toward the southeast for 2.7 miles to the junction of trail 621, which takes […]

Beartooth Butte from Near Bird Mountain

Beartooth Butte from Near Bird Mountain

View of Beartooth Butte on the left in the distance as seen from a sideroad leading from FS Road 149. The site from which the photo is taken is about 1/2 mile northeast of Bird Mountain and offers splendid 360 degree views of the Beartooth Mountains. Forest Service Road 149 takes off from US 212, The Beartooth Highway, toward the south and splinters into three or more subsidiary roads. The first 1/4 mile is suitable for passenger cars but soon becomes better suited to 4WD vehicles and ultimately only ORV’s as the roads become gnarly with numerous large rocks, deep tracks and mud holes. One should also note the signs indicating Grizzly Bears often frequent the area. A number of hunters and hunting camps were observed in the area during this mid-September trip as Elk season was just about to open.

Giant Fountain Geyser 2006

Perhaps a reason the Giant Fountain Geyser is so popular with photographers in addition to the display of the fountain itself is the large terraced pools emanating from the geyser’s center that provide impressive reflections of the setting sun.

Nye Road to Beartooth Mountains

The Nye Road to the Beartooth Mountains is a popular drive for those seeking beautiful views or choosing to camp, hike or backpack. Nye Road, State Route 419, departs State Route 78 at the small town of Absarokee and leads southwest following the Stillwater River until the road terminates at an ample parking area at the Woodbine Campground and trailhead. Here, you are at the northern border of the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness Area. Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Stillwater River, or, choose to hike to either Woodbine Falls at three fourths of a mile, or, take the 2.5-mile trail to Sioux Charley Lake. More adventurous travelers may backpack the Stillwater River Trail deep into the Beartooths. This photo was taken from a spot on the road near the entrance to Beartooth Ranch and about three fourths of a mile from the Woodbine Campground. From here (GPS coordinates: […]
